Thirteen really is unlucky - that is when it comes to the National Lottery, anyway.

MailOnline's analysis of all 3,000 draws since the Lotto began thirty years ago reveals no ball has been pulled fewer times (358).

On the other hand, 38 appears to be the magic number, cropping up 451 times.

In theory, our audit suggests your best chance of winning the jackpot is by picking 38, 23, 31, 11, 45 and 33.

But the probability margin between the 'lucky' balls and the rest of the pot is tiny, meaning you're extremely unlikely to bank a fortune by relying on those six numbers.

Admired mathematicians, however, insist there is a 27-ticket combination that guarantees you a win.

But the little-known hack won't necessarily make you a handsome profit.

Tests by MailOnline show playing the unbeatable combination in every draw since May 18 this year would have won you a total of £480.

However, you would have spent £2,970 for each £2 ticket.

The most bountiful month was September, where exactly half of the total winnings for the period (£240) would have been collected, enough to pay for a night's stay at the luxurious Pig Hotel and Restaurant in the New Forest.

But adjusting for the eight draws across the month, at £54 in tickets each, would yield a net loss of £192.

The combo would have won you 133 lucky dips - the chance to have another go, except the balls are randomly selected for you instead - including five in one go on October 12.

The trick was compiled by University of Manchester statisticians David Cushing and David Stewart and works on the idea of placing every number between one and 59 in pairs or triplets in a certain order.

MailOnline's analysis looked at figures compiled by Mersey World Lottery, an online lottery statistics collection project.

Lottery enthusiast Richard Lloyd, who runs the database, has tracked all 21,000 balls pulled since the inaugural BBC1 show hosted by Noel Edmunds on November 19, 1994.

There are over 45million possible combinations.

Prizes are awarded for tickets matching two or more balls, with six offering the biggest wins.

It means you have a one-in-45million chance of winning the jackpot, which in 2022 stood as high as £195million.

For comparison, you've got a one in 33million chance of being struck and killed by lightning, according to a 2022 study from Oxford Brookes University.

After 38, the numbers 23 and 31 have both been pulled 436 times each, ถ่ายทอดสดหวยรัฐบาลไทย while 11 has come up one short of a joint second spot with 435 instances.

Data include the Bonus Ball element of the lottery as one of the numbers chosen and numbers are correct as of Thursday 28th November.

If this section were treated separately, the most common standalone 'Bonus Ball' is 45 (80 times), followed by 38 (78 times) and 6 (73 times).

Meanwhile, the numbers 16 (369) and 1 (379) rank behind 13 at the other end of the table.

Numbers 50-59 were only introduced by then-Lottery operator Camelot in 2015, so have a much lower hit-rate.
